A few miles makai of this small stand of ‘ohe with one shoot who has just burst forth, Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō continues to erupt, sending lava through Kahauale‘a to Ka‘ohe. In the larger forest of this ‘ohe, vog moves through the canopy, pushed by a southeast wind, descending to the ground – volcanic emissions mixed with smoke from burning forest. The sky is glaring white. Even in this usually cool, wet forest, everything is hot.
