The kai hohonu of Puna and Ka‘ū is very choppy and full of whitecaps, and Ka Lae O ‘Āpua is bounded by white breakers on all sides; surf pounds the coastal areas of Keauhou-Kapāpala in Ka‘ū. Strong trade winds pass over the east rift zone of Kīlauea and accelerate, interacting with deep tropical heat coming from the southeast.
